Saudis Grow to Avow Credit Cards

  • Jun. 14th, 2008 at 4:02 AM

07:06,
I have chosen to retain and use my US issued credit cards when needed. When I opened my accounts here in the Kingdom I did inquire about obtaining a credit card. However to my surprise the terms were less than favorable. I could be provided with a pre-paid card and then Id draw down from my credit or I could get a traditional credit card that I was accustomed to using/having in the States. Although the traditional card in the Kingdom would cost me circa US$150 per year fee to have, had a credit limit of US$500 and must be paid in full each month or there would be huge penalties. It simply was not worth it.
By comparison I could retain my US cards which have no annual fees and allow me a credit limit where I could easily buy airline tickets, a car (if necessary) or take care of any unexpected emergencies.
Another factor to take into consideration as well vis-a-vis credit card (or even debit card) use in the Kingdom is whether the network is up and running as well. Many times one has problems using a debit card or atm card as the networks are oftentimes overloaded, busy or just down. Several times Ive been caught in Safeway (Tamimi) wanting to use my atm/debit card and the network has been inoperable. So in many ways, residents of the Kingdom are still pushed to the cash-based society.
