American Airlines had a busy day in Miami Florida today. They announced the re-opening of their flagship Admirals Club at Miami International Airport, then announced they were laying off 97 employees in January.
The re-opening of the Miami Flagship Lounge continues a tradition of comfort and strengthens American's premium product for First Class international customers traveling to Europe, Asia, Central and South America and Mexico City, as well as full-fare First Class transcontinental customers traveling on three-class aircraft. American also offers Flagship Lounges in four other locations: Chicago O'Hare International Airport, London Heathrow Airport, New York JFK Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
"We're focused on enhancing the travel experience for our valued customers, and the Flagship Lounge facility is an important element in this experience," said Kurt Stache, American's Vice President and General Sales Manager. "It is our pleasure to offer our eligible First Class and qualifying oneworld customers another oasis amid the hustle and bustle of major airport terminals by providing amenities for productivity, comfort and convenience."
In the same breath they announced Miami International Airport may be one of the few places where American Airlines is increasing its flight capacity. But, come Jan. 30, the company expects to lay off 97 employees there.
So for all the American Airlines passengers in Miami, you have a brand new club, you just wont have anyone to help you in there.

Tomorrow I will return to my usual rants on journalism. Tonight, however, I have to get something off my chest. We have all read about the problems with airlines: It started with charging to check baggage and now American Airlines will start charging its loyal customers to use frequent flier miles. I've done a fair share of jetting around this summer, and I can verify that flying is horrible.
In June I went to the West Coast by way of New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport. The plane, jetBlue, left the gate on time, but then it taxied for 90 minutes. There were no announcements about what was going on, but the flight attendants were quick to remind passengers calling people waiting for them on the other side of the country that "we are in an active taxi and cell phone use is not permitted." "Active" even though the plane had not moved in 20 minutes. Only after takeoff did the pilot explain the traffic jam at JFK.
My return flight on jetBlue was no better. I had a direct trip from the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, Calif., to Dulles International Airport. The plane didn't take off for two hours because of interior lighting issues. Basically, the interior lights would not shut off for the nighttime flight, when regulations require a dark cabin so people can sleep on their red-eye journeys. The delay caused many passengers connecting in Washington to New York to miss their connections and get reassigned, some to flights 10 hours later. To its credit, jetBlue sent me a survey via e-mail about my flight experience. I filled it out honestly, and the company gave me a $50 credit toward a future flight.
Too bad jetBlue is so expensive to fly to Florida, which is where I went this past weekend. I opted for Spirit Airlines out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, direct to Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. I was annoyed with Spirit before I set foot in the airport. After I had bought the ticket -- on sale -- I was given the option of selecting my seats for the outboud and return flights. This is typical of any flight transaction. Until I got the part about the charge. Spirit wants $10 per flight for a window or aisle seat, $5 for a middle seat and $15 for an exit-row spot. Silly me. I thought that when I bought my ticket, I secured my seat. In protest, I refused to pay more to select a seat.
My flight to Florida was on time. I was stuffed into the window seat in Row 24 of 26, and I had to make sure the glitter and marker on the seat wouldn't come off on my dress. Then I had to make sure I didn't step in the pile of Chex Mix that littered the floor under my seat.
On Spirit, you don't get anything for free. Water, soda, snacks will all cost you more. Whether the credit card reader is onboard and/or usable is a crapshoot. Sometimes you have to use only cash and sometimes only credit. Your guess is as good as mine, but because I buy my $2 bottle of water before I get on the plane -- but after I go through security -- I don't have to worry about it.
My return flight killed any joy that air travel had left for me. Boarding was delayed by about 30 minutes. When I finally got on, a flight attendant was apologizing for the heat: "The air conditioning works only when the engines are on." Angry and sweaty passengers -- Florida in August is oppressively hot -- yelled at other passengers to take their seats. The flight attendants chimed in, too: "Take your seats so we are not another hour and a half late." It was all I could do not to scream, "It is not the fault of your passengers that you're behind schedule or your equipment doesn't work!" The best part is after everyone was finally situated, the plane sat at the gate for another half-hour. The pilot cited trouble with the ground systems, which is why the air conditioning was still not working. I began to worry: If the plane had so many problems with its ground systems, what did that mean for its in-flight systems?
I arrived in D.C. about an hour late, cranky and dejected. The airlines blame record-high fuel prices for the additional charges. I highly doubt that when gas prices fall, the airlines will say, "Hey, let's make less money!" and go back to their old ways. And by old ways I mean providing customer service. Air travel used to be a glamorous experience, something people dressed up to do. Now it's a royal pain and the flight attendants yell at you while charging you to look out the window.
At least Spirit got me from A to B safely. At least there's that.

Rating:0 Indias investment grade credit rating looked under threat after Fitch Ratings cut its local currency grade outlook to negative on Tuesday, citing deteriorating public finances, mainly due to subsidies. Fitchs warning followed comments last week from Standard and Poors cautioning Asias third-largest economy over rising inflation and widening current account and fiscal deficits, and it sent the 10-year bond yield 7 basis points up to 9.47 per cent. India made rapid strides in setting its fiscal house in order over the past few years, prompting Fitch, Moodys and SP to assign its foreign currency debt the lowest rating in investment grade. But rising subsidies to offset costlier oil and food, interest payments and a possible hike in government wages are expected to make it miss this years fiscal target by a wide margin. Future actions with respect to Indias local currency rating will depend largely on whether the FY09 fiscal slippage is reversed, which would allow for a resumption of the decline in Indias high government debt ratios, said James McCormack, Fitchs head of Asia sovereign ratings. Fitch maintained Indias BBB-minus rating for both local and foreign currency debt and kept the outlook on the countrys foreign currency rating stable. Ratings agencies alarm over worsening government finances comes amid double-digit inflation and prospects of political uncertainty as parliament convenes on July 21-22 for a confidence vote in which the government will have to prove its majority. Communist parties, who had lent the ruling coalition parliamentary support for four years, ended their backing last week in protest over a nuclear energy deal with the United States. FIZZLING OUT Moodys still rates Indias local currency debt as speculative. Analysts said Fitchs revised outlook could make offshore borrowing by Indian companies more expensive. Their ability to raise capital abroad is compromised, said Abheek Barua, chief economist at HDFC Bank. If the situation was more normal, I would have dismissed this as a peripheral thing. In this kind of market this will have an impact, he said. The federal fiscal deficit dropped to 2.8 per cent of gross domestic product in 2007/08 from 5.9 per cent in 2002/03, thanks largely to buoyant tax revenues from blistering economic growth. The economy has expanded by 9 per cent or more in the past three years. The central bank estimates it to grow between 8.0-8.5 per cent in the current fiscal year to March, above the estimates of many private sector economists.
